My anime rant also reminds me of another amazing series that tanked here: Cyborg 009. For those of you who don’t remember, Sony promoted the fuck out of the show. It got featured in TV Guide, it had a lot of TV spots, the Toonami airing was heavily promoted, and I think the DVD release got pimped…
I remember when Cyborg 009 aired on Adult Swim at night. It was a good show, I got into it. There was a time period probably like between 2003 and 2005 when Adult Swim was getting all sorts of great, new (for us), and different action anime shows.
Unfortunately, when shows get moved to a later time slot, its because its ratings aren’t doing as good as expected, which is most likely what happened. :/ And i think due to ratings not being good on when they show new things in comparison to showing Cowboy Bebop constantly (for the past what… 10 years?) that just means the demographic that watches Adult Swim/Toonami just doesn’t seem open to those types of shows.
I think like what one person said… Americans are dumb. yeah, the western anime fanbase is just…not that great. Everyone is mostly into action shows that appear in stuff like Shonen Jump or whatever.
Anyway, yeah I feel you on your anime rant. Though, I find manga is a better outlet if you like other niche genres. I’ve seen way more magical girl and general shoujo type series translated and released stateside over the years. However, we lost a lot of that when tokyopop died. Though I think Kodansha and whatever the other couple of companies are making a come back. I’ve been able to buy Card Captor Sakura again and theres been a rerelease of other CLAMP titles. Heres hoping to any success with CLAMP titles means more magical girl stuff. :/
